About Me
My name is Camden Jones. I am a wildlife artist who seeks to capture the fleeting treasure of birds with charcoals and watercolors.
I believe that birds are a visible evidence of an invisible God. They reveal His divine nature, supernatural creativity, and delicate care. They have been created with so much variety and intricate detail that each one of them is a treasure.
I am especially drawn to birds because their variety and value is not overtly apparent. Looking for them feels like a treasure hunt! The first time my wife and I found a yellow warbler, it was as if we had found a literal gold nugget in a willow tree. Unfortunately, birds are fleeting in nature—they are only there for a moment. This is why I believe art is such a valuable tool! Through a drawing or a painting, I can share my experience with others in a way that lasts.
If I'm honest, capturing a fleeting subject is innately challenging to do. Most of my early artistic experience has been in still life work—which allowed all the time I needed. Painting and drawing birds requires a different mindset all-together. One thing still life has taught me is that direct observation is invaluable to understanding a subject. So, I look for birds and take as many notes about their appearances and behaviors as possible. Ultimately, I want to get a sense for who they are as individuals so that what carries over to my work rings true.
When I create work, I am drawn to simple and thoughtful designs. Often, when a subject is presented minimally, more thought is required to maintain that subject's life and interest. Each piece that I create is carefully designed to show no more than is necessary, while still evoking something full of life and meaning.
